Environmental

Students are challenged to develop an affordable and effective system to treat water for various contaminants. The team is given a problem statement that includes a description on contaminated water. Students then must research the best method for the treatment of the water and write a design paper detailing the reason they chose their process and an estimation of the cost for removal per gram of contaminants. Students are exposed to an increasingly important branch of Civil Engineering as water scarcity increases and we must make use of all sources of water.

Surveying

Surveying is the practice of detailed measurement for construction and planning. Using prescribed equipment and an understanding of geometry, the competitors must measure and calculate distances, angles, and elevations of features in a course. While the event has a stringent time limit, points are awarded for the highest accuracy. This event encourages thorough preparation for surveying scenarios and their methods with an emphasis on precision. Surveying is an important aspect of every Civil Engineering project and this competition showcases the field to student engineers.

Transportation

Transportation

Each year, the Transportation Team is challenged with a road-highway design prompt for the Pacific Southwest Conference. The project challenges our urban planning skills, geometric design concepts, pavement design, facility design, and analysis of conditions such as traffic using metrics and trends. With transportation engineering becoming more and more in demand as many facilities reach the end of their design lives in our region, the ASCE Transportation Team harbors skills that are not taught in the CSUN curriculum. The project also requires the team to take into considering environmental factors, land use, earthwork, and cost estimation.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a valuable project as it shapes the future of our society. It is critical to practice sustainability in order to provide a safer environment. The project challenges engineers to compose a dam that can minimize the amount of water that passes with a minimum amount of plastic. Our engineers brainstorm multiple ideas and conduct several tests until we find the most efficient solution.
